STAGE 27

About Us & Latest News

Stage 27 is one of the most established, self-financed Amateur Dramatics Groups in Birmingham and is based at Acocks Green Methodist Church.

The Group started life in the mid-fifties as the Tracom Repertory Company - the name being an incorporation of tragedy and comedy, reflecting the Company's original aim to alternate productions between two different theatrical styles. Stage 27 changed it's name in the 60's as a tribute in memory of their then producer Stanley Evans. More recently the Group changed it's name again to achieve a more modernised stature whilst keeping the original Stanley Theatre initials, STAGE27 (Stanley Theatre, Acocks Green Entertainers). 27 is the first part of our postcode!

From it's foundation, the Company staged regular productions at the former Birmingham Theatre Centre in Islington Row. When Birmingham’s famous Old Rep Theatre opened its doors to Amateur Groups in September 1972, the Group gained the distinction of being the first Amateur Society to perform with their production of Noel Cowards’ “Present Laughter”. The Company has gone on to perform many productions in Theatres and Festivals around the country. With members from all walks of life, age and profession, Stage 27 is a fun sociable Group. We enjoy what we do and don't take anything too seriously!

Whilst all the Members of Stage 27 join on a voluntary basis, we are all eager to move the Group forward, and like to seize every opportunity! We perform two productions a year - a main summer production at The Old Rep Theatre or mac Arts Centre, and a fundraising show around Christmas. We also support and work with The Birmingham District Theatre Guild (of which we are Committee Members), and regularly enter their BFAME Festival, which acts as the first round of The All England Theatre Festival. Members of Stage 27 have also taken part in filming for television, and are regularly approached for appearances. The Group is also eager to help with and get involved with fellow Amateur Dramatics projects.

Our most recent achievement was taking second place and winning the Will Haughton Cup in the BFAME Festival with our production of Alan Ayckbourn's 'Cut In The Rates' and going forward to represent Birmingham in the the Quarter Final of The All England Theatre Festival in April 2011. This was an immense achievement for the Group, and we are very proud. The Group currently has approximately 20 members, some of whom took part in a Lord Of The Rings Dramatisation as part of Shire Productions at The Tolkien Weekend at Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog in May 2011.

Our last production was 'Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates' at Acocks Green Methodist Church on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December 2011. We are currently in the process of looking at possible scripts for our next production in Summer 2012. The Group consists of approximately 20 members. We are always open to new recruits!

Stage27 meets every Wednesday at 8pm for rehearsals at Acocks Green Methodist Church and is always on the look out for new talent! We are passionate about supporting Amateur Dramatics, and all enjoy being in the Group. It is an incredibly fun hobby, and many skills can be gained.
